Fort Dorchester Elementary is the proud winner of a GenMove grant from McDonald’s. FDES is one of five schools in the Charleston area, and the only one from Dorchester Two, to receive this grant. GenMove’s K-12 Physical Education program helps teachers educate the whole student by engaging both body and mind. GenMove is committed to fighting childhood obesity as well as maximizing academic achievement. The activities are designed to spark a life long interest in physical fitness and instill healthy habits in students of all ages. Through this grant FDES will recieve funding for programming, equipment, and staff training.
Farm to School Grant
Have you visited the school garden lately? With the help of our Gator Gardeners, we have grown broccoli, collards, and cabbage this winter. Our next taste test will be for fourth grade- they will taste raw broccoli with ranch dressing. We’re also looking forward to a bumper crop of strawberries and herbs this spring. The Gator Gardeners are busy planting vegetable seeds so we’ll have plants to give to families at FDES for their home gardens. Now is the time to get those beds ready for spring planting! Finally, pickets are still available to decorate on our fence. For $5.00 you can leave your mark at FDES. See Mrs. Kelien if you would like to decorate a picket.
Storm the Citadel
Storm the Citadel
The FDES Great Green Gators came in second in the accuracy competition at the Citadel on Saturday, February 18th. See the Gator Gallery for pictures of the competition. Way to go Great Green Gators!
FLL Robotics Competition
The FDES Gator-Bots had a successful weekend while competing at the FLL Regional Competition on Feb.2nd at River Oaks Middle School.
Math and Science Night
Math and Science Night was a huge success. A big thank you goes out to all who participated, especially our classroom teachers who provided a wide variety of hands-on activities, which included iPads and computers. Thank you to Magnolia Gardens, Lowe's, South Carolina Aquarium, SPCA, Mad Science and our math and science interventionists for joining us again this year to share your expertise.
Third Grade Cookbook
"FDES Cooking for a Cause" cookbooks are still on sale. The cookbooks are $12.00 and all proceeds will go to the Lowcountry Food Bank of Charleston. The cookbooks include more than 200 tasty recipes from FDES gator staff and families. Please contact the office or your child's homeroom teacher for an order form. Thank you, 3rd grade Teachers.
Technology Tidbit
Compass Learning Odyssey is now available for home use. This web-based learning tool is a great way for your child to work on standards based activities at home. The Odyssey login address is http://compassn1.ddtwo.org. Your child’s user name and password are their student number so they login just like they do at school.
Before starting the program, click the “check system” button at the bottom of the login screen to start a system check. You can easily see which requirements have not been met and access the appropriate websites via the links provided. Kindergarten and first grade students should select the Language Arts icon to access their folders. Second through fifth grade students should select the science and social studies icons to access their activities.
Gator-Up Sports Club
Gator-Up Sports Club
FDES gators now have the opportunity to be part of our morning sports club from 6:30am-7:00am. Students in 3rd, 4thand 5th grade can participate in Speed Stacking and juggling. Each grade level will have a 2 week rotation. Students can ask their homeroom teacher for a form to bring home and then return to Missy Mortier in the PE department. The form will include the dates for their grade level’s rotation. A confirmation letter will be sent home with the student to confirm they have a spot in the club. There will be 20 openings for each grade level during their rotation. All spots are on a first come basis. Parents will be responsible for transportation to school in the morning to participate in the club. If you have any question please contact Missy Mortier at mmortier@dorchester2.k12.sc.us .
